AI tutor vs human tutor: when to use each
Compare AI and human tutors by availability, cost, curriculum, feedback and student needs. Learn when each is the better choice.
The differences that matter
The decision should start with the student's actual problem. “They need tutoring” is too broad. Are they stuck on tonight's equation? Avoiding English because writing feels overwhelming? Missing foundational knowledge? Preparing for a high-stakes assessment? The answer changes the right kind of support.

Neither column is a guarantee of quality. A poorly designed AI tool can give plausible errors or do too much of the work. A human tutor may be a poor match, lack relevant curriculum knowledge or use an approach that does not help the student think.
When an AI tutor makes sense
The student needs help now
Homework problems rarely arrive on a tutor's timetable. An AI tutor can help after school, on weekends or late in the evening without an appointment. PocketTutor lets a student type, dictate or photograph a question, then receive an age-pitched explanation or worked method.
This is particularly useful when the barrier is small but immediate: “I don't understand what the gradient means”, “where did my algebra go wrong?” or “quiz me on these notes before tomorrow”. Resolving that block can let the student continue independently.
The student needs more practice between lessons
Practice is hard to fit into one weekly human session. An AI tutor can set one task at a time, respond to the answer and create another opportunity immediately. PocketTutor's Practice mode does not reveal the answer to the question in play; Quiz mode provides feedback after the student commits to an answer.
This can also complement a teacher or human tutor. The person identifies a priority; the student uses AI for short repetitions during the week; the next human session reviews what remains difficult.
The student wants a low-pressure way to ask “basic” questions
Some students stay quiet because they are worried a question is obvious. An AI tutor can repeat, simplify or offer another example without frustration. Students can switch at any time; the tutor changes how content is taught, not what is covered.
The family wants predictable, broad everyday support
Subscription pricing can make frequent use more predictable than paying per hour. PocketTutor has a free Basic plan with daily limits, and Plus is $19/month billed annually - $228 a year - or $29 month to month. This is not the same service as dedicated one-to-one human tuition, and the cheaper price does not prove equal results. It offers a different kind of access.
When a human tutor is the stronger choice
The learning difficulty is persistent or unclear
If a student repeatedly struggles despite explanations and practice, a human can observe how they approach tasks, probe misconceptions across several activities and adjust in real time. A qualified teacher or specialist may also recognise when the issue extends beyond one subject skill.
A parent should speak with the school before assuming private tutoring is the only answer. The classroom teacher knows the taught program and may be able to explain the gap, offer support or recommend an appropriate next step.
The student needs a stable human relationship
Some students work harder because another person knows them, expects them to arrive and celebrates progress. A skilled tutor can read tone, body language, avoidance and fatigue. AI can be encouraging, but it should not imitate a friendship or replace trusted adults.
The eSafety Commissioner's 2026 research on children and AI emphasises that AI is not a trusted adult, particularly for personal or wellbeing advice. A child discussing distress, relationships, bullying or mental health needs a parent, teacher, counsellor or appropriate support service - not more tutoring prompts.
The task is high stakes or highly specific
A human with current HSC, VCE, QCE or other senior-syllabus experience may be the better investment for a major assessment, oral presentation, portfolio or specialised subject. They can interpret teacher feedback, examine a body of work, rehearse an oral response and use professional judgement about what matters most.
AI can still support practice, but it should not be the final authority. School rules govern whether AI may be used on an assessment.
The child needs professional or specialised support
An AI tutor does not diagnose dyslexia, ADHD, language disorders, anxiety or any other condition. It does not replace a learning-support teacher, psychologist, speech pathologist, occupational therapist or other qualified professional. PocketTutor offers useful access features such as voice input, narration on Plus, age-pitched language, images and reduced motion, but it has not completed a formal WCAG audit and makes no clinical claims.
If a child has identified learning or accessibility needs, include the school and relevant professionals in the support plan. A human tutor should understand and work within that plan rather than claim to treat a condition.
Human tutoring has evidence - but implementation matters
Evidence for Learning's review describes one-to-one tuition as potentially effective targeted support and notes that it can be closely matched to a student's understanding. It also says outcomes vary, Australian-specific evidence on the one-to-one element is limited, and quality, training, links to classroom content and monitoring all matter. That research is about tutoring approaches broadly. It is not evidence that any particular commercial tutor will improve results, and it does not establish outcomes for PocketTutor. PocketTutor has not measured grade, confidence or learning gains and does not claim that it has.
A practical combined model
For many families, a layered approach is more useful than an either-or choice.
Everyday layer - AI support. Use an AI tutor for explanations, practice, quick quizzes, revision, study materials and getting unstuck. Keep sessions short and active: the student attempts, explains and checks.
Diagnostic layer - teacher or human tutor. Use the classroom teacher or a human tutor to identify persistent gaps, interpret assessment feedback, agree priorities and review whether the support is working.
Human-support layer - family and professionals. Keep motivation, wellbeing, learning needs and school decisions with people. AI may notice a phrase and point towards help; it cannot understand the whole situation or take responsibility for a child.
A simple four-week trial can clarify what is needed:
- Choose one specific goal, such as confidently solving two-step equations.
- Record a starting example or teacher feedback.
- Use short AI practice during the week, or book the human support being tested.
- Revisit a comparable task without assistance.
- Ask the student what helped and check with the teacher where appropriate.
Do not treat time in an app or the number of sessions as the outcome. Look for independent understanding and the ability to transfer the skill to new work.
