How students can use AI for homework without cheating

A practical guide for Australian students: use AI to explain, quiz and give feedback without letting it do assessed work for you.

Start by working out what kind of work it is

“Homework” can mean two very different things:

  • Learning work: practice questions, revision, reading, building skills or preparing for a test.
  • Assessment work: an assignment, report, investigation, submitted draft, take-home test or other work used to judge what you can do.

AI is easier to use appropriately for learning work. Assessment rules are stricter because the result must show your knowledge and skills. Some tasks permit AI for brainstorming or editing if it is acknowledged. Others prohibit it completely. If the instructions are unclear, ask your teacher before using AI - not after the work is finished.

There is no single permission rule for every Australian school or task. NESA says unapproved AI use in assignments is a breach of academic integrity and tells students to follow their school's policy. VCAA similarly says unattributed or disallowed generative AI use in assessment may breach academic integrity.

The Australian Framework for Generative AI in Schools recognises both the opportunities and the risks of AI, including errors, privacy concerns and threats to assessment integrity. Responsible use is not about pretending AI does not exist. It is about keeping your thinking visible.

Five rules that keep the learning yours

1. Ask for teaching, not a submission

Turn “write this for me” into a request that makes you do the thinking. Instead of “Write my 800-word essay on how power is shown in Macbeth”, try “Ask me questions that will help me form my own argument about power in Macbeth. Do not write the introduction for me.” Instead of “Give me the answers to questions 1 to 10”, try “Explain the idea I need for question 1, then give me a similar practice question. Let me answer before you explain the next step.”

This distinction matters even when a tool has a study mode. A learning-oriented setting can encourage better behaviour, but you are still responsible for the request and the work submitted.

2. Make an attempt before asking for feedback

An imperfect first attempt is useful evidence: it shows what you understand and where you are stuck. Share that attempt and ask for a diagnosis, a hint or feedback. Useful prompts include:

  • “Here is my working. Point out the first step where I went wrong, but don't finish the problem.”
  • “Here is my paragraph. Tell me what is clear and what needs stronger evidence. Don't rewrite it.”
  • “Quiz me with one question at a time and wait for my answer.”
  • “Explain this at Year 8 level, then ask me to explain it back in my own words.”

3. Follow the task's AI and acknowledgement rules

If AI use is allowed, record what you used it for while you work. Do not rely on memory at the end. Keep the prompts, outputs and changes you made if your school asks for a process record.

Acknowledgement requirements differ. A teacher may ask for a statement of which tool was used, the prompts, the date, and how the response influenced the work. Some referencing styles have their own approach. Use the format your school specifies rather than inventing one.

For NSW HSC students, NESA's 2026 HSC guide says sources must be acknowledged and lists unauthorised generative-AI use as malpractice. VCAA's school-based assessment guidance makes clear that unattributed or disallowed use may breach academic integrity. These are examples of a broader principle: permission and disclosure matter.

4. Check the answer against something reliable

Generative AI can produce an answer that sounds confident and is still wrong. Queensland's Department of Education advises families that AI results are not always accurate and should be carefully reviewed. Check important claims against:

  • class notes and teacher-provided materials
  • the textbook or prescribed source
  • an official curriculum, government or primary source
  • your own calculation or substitution
  • your teacher, particularly where sources disagree.

Do not cite a source simply because an AI tool named it. Open the source and confirm that it exists, says what the tool claims and applies to the question.

5. Be able to explain every part you submit

Before submitting, put the AI away and ask:

  • Could I explain this sentence or step to my teacher?
  • Does this sound like me?
  • Can I recreate the method on a new question?
  • Have I checked every quotation, fact and reference?
  • Have I disclosed permitted AI help in the required way?

If the answer is no, the work is not ready. Go back to the idea you do not understand and ask for a simpler explanation or more practice.

The middle column is deliberately cautious. Brainstorming, outlining and editing may be allowed in one class and prohibited in another.

How parents can support responsible use

Start with curiosity rather than an accusation. Ask your child to show you how they used the tool and what they learned from it. A useful conversation is:

  1. What does the task say about AI?
  2. What did you try before asking for help?
  3. What did the tool explain or question?
  4. What did you change or decide yourself?
  5. How will you check the result?

Agree on practical boundaries: no personal or sensitive information in prompts; no AI on assessed work without permission; keep process evidence when required; and speak to a teacher or trusted adult when a task or answer is unclear.
