AI tutor vs ChatGPT: which is better for school students?
Compare an AI tutor with ChatGPT for schoolwork. See where each helps, what Australian parents should check, and how PocketTutor differs.
The short comparison
ChatGPT has moved well beyond simply producing quick answers. Its study features can use guiding questions, step-by-step support, uploads and quizzes, and its teen experience adds stronger protections and responsible-homework reminders. PocketTutor is narrower by design: it is an Australian school tutor for Foundation to Year 12, with structured syllabus retrieval, distinct learning modes, age-pitched explanations and family progress tools.

Where ChatGPT can be the better fit
ChatGPT is useful when the task extends beyond a school tutoring workflow. A student might want to explore a broad interest, compare ideas from several sources, plan a personal project, practise a language, get help with code or turn their notes into different formats. Its generality is the point.
It also has real learning features. Study mode can ask questions, scaffold a response, work with uploaded images or files, create practice questions and use memory when enabled. For teenage users, the teen experience applies teen-oriented protections and can redirect apparent assignment-shortcut attempts towards study mode. It would be inaccurate to say ChatGPT only hands over answers.
ChatGPT may therefore suit an older student who:
- can give clear context about their course and task
- understands when and how AI use is permitted by their school
- will check important claims against class materials or reliable sources
- wants one flexible tool for study and other projects
- has a parent who has reviewed the teen, privacy and training settings with them.
Study mode is still AI, not a teacher. OpenAI notes that it can make mistakes and may sometimes provide a direct answer. A setting can encourage good study behaviour, but it cannot make every use academically appropriate.
Where a purpose-built AI tutor can be the better fit
A dedicated AI tutor can reduce the amount of setup a student has to do. Instead of repeatedly explaining “I'm in Year 8 in Queensland, teach this at my level and quiz me afterwards”, that educational context can sit inside the product.
PocketTutor is designed for this narrower job. For Foundation to Year 10 it uses Australian Curriculum v9 content; for Years 11 and 12 it uses the relevant state or territory senior-secondary syllabus. When a subject is selected, the app retrieves relevant syllabus content so its explanation, quiz or feedback is grounded in what the student is studying. A broad ChatGPT conversation can work from curriculum material supplied to it, but it does not use PocketTutor's built-in Australian subject map and mastery system.
PocketTutor may suit a family that wants:
- a school-only environment from Foundation to Year 12
- age-pitched language set from the student's year level
- seven AI tutors with distinct teaching approaches, from step-by-step scaffolding to inquiry-led questions
- dedicated modes for learning, worked solutions, practice, quizzes, feedback on the student's own work, study materials and study support
- a plan shaped by upcoming assessments, goals, recent struggles and quiz evidence
- a parent view of activity, coverage and progress without showing the child's conversations
- separate profiles for siblings on Plus
- safety systems built and tested specifically for student tutoring.
This structure does not prove that PocketTutor produces better grades, and PocketTutor has not measured that outcome. It does mean the product is organised around Australian school study rather than asking families to build that structure through prompts.
A closer look at homework and academic integrity
Both tools can support legitimate learning, and both can be misused. The key question is not simply which brand a student opens; it is what the student asks the tool to do and what they submit afterwards.
Australia's education authorities put the responsibility with schools and students. NESA says unapproved AI use in assignments breaches academic integrity, while schools decide their specific rules. Victoria's VCAA similarly warns that unattributed or disallowed generative AI use in assessment may breach academic integrity. PocketTutor is explanation-first by default. Practice mode sets one task at a time and does not reveal the answer to the task in play. Review gives feedback on the student's own draft rather than presenting itself as the author. Solve mode does provide full worked solutions when a student needs to see the method. That is useful for learning, but a student must still follow their school's rules and submit their own work.
ChatGPT's study mode and teen homework reminders also encourage active problem-solving. Neither product can guarantee that a determined student will never use AI inappropriately.
Safety and privacy are different questions
“Does it block inappropriate content?” and “What happens to my child's data?” need separate answers.
ChatGPT gives teen users stronger default protections and allows linked parents to manage selected settings and quiet hours. OpenAI's terms set a minimum age of 13. Its consumer data controls allow users or linked parents to turn off model-improvement training; OpenAI says personal-workspace content may otherwise be used to improve models depending on settings.
PocketTutor takes a different account approach. A younger child uses a profile created inside an adult account and needs no child login. The student profile asks for a first name and year level, not a date of birth, school, address or phone number. PocketTutor states that conversations are not used to train its AI providers. Parents can delete a child's profile or the whole household account.
For content safety, PocketTutor checks every free-text message. School-scope rules, input moderation and parent-blocked topics limit inappropriate requests. If language suggests distress, the normal tutoring reply is replaced with a reviewed response pointing the student towards Kids Helpline and other relevant Australian support. There are no ads, strangers or user-to-user messages.

A practical way to choose
Try the same low-stakes learning task in the tools you are considering. Do not judge only by how polished the first response sounds. Ask:
- Did the tool establish the student's year, subject and goal?
- Did it explain the idea or simply complete the work?
- Could the student answer a follow-up question without the tool?
- Was the content consistent with the student's class materials?
- Could the student or parent report a problem and delete their data?
- Are the age rules and parent controls appropriate for this child?
For many families, the answer need not be exclusive. An older student may use a dedicated tutor for day-to-day curriculum study and a general AI assistant for broader projects. The important part is choosing the tool deliberately, setting boundaries and keeping teachers and trusted adults in the loop.
